FREEPORT - As Aaron Spears rumbles down the court, boxes out, or fights for position on the post, one thing almost always remains constant - the smile. If nothing else, the 6-foot-9, 260-pound center always seems to be enjoying himself when he's on the floor.

Derrick catches everyone's attention

DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

At last summer's prestigious Nike Camp in Indianapolis, only 19 of the 203 players stood 6-9 or taller. Derrick Caracter was one of the them. He was also one of only four who weighed in at over 285 pounds.
As amazing as those facts seem, consider this: At the time, Caracter had yet to step foot onto a high school court. Not because of any disciplinary or eligibility problems, but because Caracter had only just completed eighth grade.
