Women's Hoops News .c The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) - St. John's fired women's basketball coach Darcel Estep and assistant Joyce Jenkins on Friday and promoted Pechone

Stepps to take over for the rest of the season on an interim basis.

The Red Storm was 3-13 overall and last in the Big East with an 0-5 league mark.

Estep, hired on June 21, 1999, was 22-50. She was the head coach at Morgan State before joining St. John's.

Jenkins was in her third year at St. John's after being the head coach at Maryland-Eastern Shore from 1994-99.

Stepps was in his second year as an assistant at St. John's. First-year assistant Brooke Renkens will remain on the staff.

Bernard Rencher, a former star at St. John's, will join the staff. He was serving as coordinator of student-athlete academic support at St. John's.

Associate vice president for athletics Kathy Meehan also will assist the women's basketball program.
