Cook's...decision to sign with St. John's (along with Miles) was broken not by a newspaper but by Redmen.com.

Mullin, Carnesecca - Festival Highlights

College Hoops Robertson, Abdul-Jabbar lead Holiday Festival team

By JIM O'CONNELL

NEW YORK (AP) - Hall of Famers Oscar Robertson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Bradley and Tom Gola were selected to the all-time Holiday Festival team.

Chris Mullin was the fifth player chosen to the

team that was announced Tuesday at Madison Square Garden. The arena has hosted every Festival, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this month.

Lou Carnesecca, another Hall of Famer, is the all-time coach in voting by New York area sports writers.

Robertson's only Festival appearance came in 1959 when Cincinnati won the title. He scored a tournament-record 47 points in his first game and had 50 in the final.

``Once you played there and knew you did well, you'd be remembered forever,'' Robertson said.

Bradley was the MVP in 1964 despite his Princeton team finishing fourth. He scored 110 points in three games, including 41 in a semifinal loss to Michigan and Cazzie Russell.

Abdul-Jabbar grew up in New York and returned with UCLA teammates in 1968 to win the tournament. He had 40 points and 16 rebounds in the semifinals and 30 points and 22 rebounds in the title game.

``I was at the Bradley-Cazzie game screaming my head off,'' Abdul-Jabbar said Tuesday. ``The fact that I had the opportunity to come back and play in this building as a collegian meant a lot to my career and my life.''

Gola was the MVP of the first Festival in 1952 and he played in it the next two seasons as well with La Salle.

``Just being in the building, not this one, the old one, was thrilling,'' said Gola, referring to the Garden's former location about a mile away.

Mullin played in the Festival four times with St. John's, reaching the final each time and winning it three times. He was selected MVP twice.

Carnesecca led St. John's to eight Festival titles and a 30-9 record in 17 appearances.

``This is home,'' he said. ``It wasn't me who won any of those games, just some great players.''

This year's tournament will be held Dec. 27-28, with Iona playing No. 12 North Carolina and St. John's playing defending champion Manhattan in the first round.
