Team News Red White Club Holds First Of Two Basketball Preseason Preview Receptions On Long Island

Coaches Roberts and Barnes Arico discuss the 2007-08 season, incoming freshmen and playing at MSG.

Oct. 20, 2007

QUEENS, N.Y. - Red Storm basketball fans got their first chance to talk with head coaches Norm Roberts and Kim Barnes Arico about the upcoming season during a

reception held at the Long Island Marriott in Long Island on Thursday. More than 50 people attended the event, the first of two preview receptions presented by the St. John's Red White Club.

Director of Athletics Chris Monasch opened the event by commenting on the BIG EAST schedule as well as playing at Madison Square Garden before introducing Barnes Arico. The sixth year head coach of the women's team discussed and answered questions about her incoming freshmen and talked about the first few days of practice. Barnes-Arico also discussed the strength of her squad's schedule, which includes a home matchup with perennial-powerhouse Baylor.

Roberts then opened by talking about his freshmen class and his team's schedule which includes seven games played at MSG. Roberts answered questions about his team's youth, the BIG EAST Conference and his expectations from both the upperclassmen and freshmen.

All St. John's fans, alumni and friends are reminded that there will be another preview reception held on Tuesday, November 6. This reception will be held at Stout NYC on 133 West 33rd St. in New York, N.Y. The event will be held from 7-9 p.m. at a cost of $40 per person.

The price of admission covers appetizers and an open bar. Please reserve your place for the Stout NYC reception by Nov. 2, by contacting Valerie Richardson at 718-990-7566 or richardv@stjohns.edu.

The men's basketball team adds seven exciting newcomers to a squad that posted St. John's first winning record since 2002-03 a season ago (16-15), amassed the most victories since its 21-13 campaign in 2003, and compiled its best conference record (7-9) in four seasons. Senior Eugene Lawrence, the BIG EAST's leader in assists last season with 5.6 per game, and junior Anthony Mason Jr. (11.9 points per game, 5.9 rebounds per game), lead the cast of six returning letterwinners for St. John's.

The Red Storm return all five starters on the women's side, including All-BIG EAST guard Kia Wright, who finished second on the squad in scoring (14.0 ppg) and led the conference in assists (5.5 apg). Team leading scorer Monique McLean (15.7 ppg) and Tiina Sten (12.5 ppg) also return for Barnes Arico, whose group advanced to a fourth-straight BIG EAST Tournament in 2006-07. Four talented newcomers join the Red Storm this season as well.
