We all laughed at Norm Roberts. Ha Ha, Ho Ho, Chuckle, Chuckle. NIT bid Mr. Coach of a team with a losing record? Well looks who's laughing now in the wake of an overtime loss that puts the Red Storm at .500 heading into the regular-season finale at Notre Dame (A team SJU has already beaten. It looks like the players bought into Norm's crazy vision of the future. Who else out there will witness and believe? Georgetown had won the last five meetings against St. John's This was the first overtime meeting between the two schools in 91 meetings. The last OT game for St. John's was in last season's final MSG game against West Virginia. From that point on, the Hoyas made just one field goal until OT started and went 6-of-12 at the free throw line. Paris Horne, who played all 45 minutes, and Rob Thomas each scored 16 points. It was a career-high for Thomas, who had four free throws in the final 51 seconds to force overtime. Thomas was 6-for-6 from the line. He enetered the game shooting a 54.3 percent clip on free throws. D.J. Kennedy's two free throws with 1:15 left in OT gave SJU the lead for good. Kennedy had nine points and 10 rebounds. As a team the Red Storm went 15-of-17 from the line, a season-best 88.2 percent. Justin Burrell returned to the starting lineup and had eight points and four rebounds in 28 minutes. Thomas came off the bench and played 30 minutes.. SJU outrebounded Georgetown, 46-25, including a 15-5 advantage on the offensive glass. The Hoyas won the turnover battle, 14-19. 12 of the 19 SJU turnovers were steals. Greg Monroe led the Hoyas with 18 points. DeJuan Summers had 10 points. Georgetown did play without injured starting guard Austin Freeman. Norm's Normisms: "This was definitely one of the best games I've been a part of as a coach. We never gave up, even down 15 when everything that could go wrong went wrong. The guys showed tremendous character. I told them 'Don't let the offense affect the defense. All our guys, to a man, stepped up and made big plays." |
