March 29, 1943 Men's Basketball St. John's - 48 Toledo - 27
Sixty-six years ago today, St. John's won its first National Invitation Tournament, beating Toledo 48-27 in front of 18,233 at Madison Square Garden. Sophomore center Harry Boykoff and guard Al Moschetti shared game-high honors with 13 points each. Boykoff was named the tournament most valuable player, scoring 56 points in three games. The Redmen, seeded second, jumped out to leads of 8-0 and 22-10 before settling for a 22-16 halftime edge. The Rockets scored the first six points after the break to tie the score at 22. Forward Lionel Baxter scored to put the Redmen up for good 24-22. Toledo (22-3) would only score five more points the rest of the way, as St. John's ended to the contest on a 26-5 run. Team captain Fuzzy Levane held Davage Minor, the Rockets leading scorer, to zero points. The Redmen (21-2) would go on to face NCAA champion Wyoming in the Red Cross Benefit at Madison Square Garden.
