Early Goal Lifts No. 10 St. John’s Past Rutgers, 1-0

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Junior midfielder Shalrie Joseph (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored just over two minutes into the game and the 10th-ranked St. John’s University men’s soccer made the goal stand up in a 1-0 win over BIG EAST rival Rutgers on Wednesday night. The Red Storm improve to 9-2-2 overall and 6-1-1 in the conference.

Just 2:19 into the game, sophomore midfielder Patrick Lonergan (Millington, N.J.) controlled the ball on the right wing and sent a ball to the middle. In traffic, Joseph took a header, which went past Scarlet Knights goalkeeper Ricky Zinter for the game’s only score. It was Joseph’s team-best eighth goal of the season and Lonergan’s fourth assist this season.

The St. John’s defense withstood a couple of rallies by Rutgers, but limited the Scarlet Knights to only two shots on goal in the first half.

In the second half, the Red Storm had chances, with freshman midfielder JME Amoako (Brooklyn, N.Y.), junior midfielder Jeff Matteo (Stormville, N.Y.) narrowly missing on scoring chances.

Late in the game, Rutgers appeared ready to tie the game. With St. John’s goalkeeper Jeffrey Stoklosa (Newark, Del.) coming out of the box, a shot was deflected away from the goal by freshman Chris Wingert (Babylon, N.Y.). Minutes later, a wide-open shot from the left side was stopped on a diving save by Stoklosa.

Each team took eight shots on goal and managed three corner kicks. Stoklosa posted two saves in goal and the Red Storm defense posted its fifth shutout of the season.

St. John’s returns to action on Saturday, playing at Notre Dame at 8 p.m.
