Chavez to Play in Umbro Select All-Star Classic

Jamaica, N.Y. – Senior Omar Chavez (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle/Felician) will participate in the 2001 Umbro Select All-Star Tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Florida from February 1-4. Chavez was selected to participate from the top collegiate seniors throughout the country.

For the past six years, the Umbro Select All-Star Classic has become one of the highlights in the USA’s national soccer calendar. Held in early February each year, the Umbro Select features a major international soccer match along with all-star games with the top senior collegiate players from throughout the United States. Major League Soccer holds spring training for each of its teams in the area during this time, and the annual MLS Player Draft is held the same weekend as Umbro Select. With dozens of professional coaches in the area for spring training, the Umbro Select All-Star Classic gives them one last chance to take a look at the nation’s top collegiate players who are professional prospects.

Chavez led a St. John’s defense that recorded 10 shutouts and allowed only 14 goals, including just four in the BIG EAST, during the 2000 season. Chavez, the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week three times last season, started all 21games for the Red Storm and helped guide the team to a 14-5-2 overall record, including an NCAA Tournament first-round win.

Chavez will play in the 2001 Umbro Select men’s college game on Sunday, February 4 at 4:00 PM at Lockhart Stadium.
