The news makes me happy.. It should be a little easier in the AFC east this year.. Next year might be different with Edgerin James possibly going to the Phins.

I am a big Jet fan as well, but I feel sorry for Miami fans. Had he retired after the season fine. But to go through all the spring mini-camps and then retire a week before training camp starts is a selfish move. Not to mention the two first rounders Miami gave up for him.

here's a man who's been treated for psychological problems.

he needs to talk.

the rest of the nfl could retire, the jets would still find a way to lose.

sorry, i've suffered with them since they were the titans.

I'm a Dolphin fan. I came home around 1am Sunday morning and found out from my brother, I thought he was joking at first, but then I realized it's Ricky Williams and anything is possible with him. I understand why he retired, if your heart really isn't into something then why do it? The thing that pisses me off is that he did it a week before training camp when the team's whole offense is centered around him. Had he retired after the '03 season I would have bee upset, but at least the team could go after a back in the draft, sign a free agent, or make a trade. I read on ESPN.com that he has a no quit clause in his contract and he can be sued for $3 million dollars if he does quit. I'm thinking he's trying to be blacklisted by the league for coming out and saying that he still smokes weed and that most of the player in the league do it and use that liquid to mask it.

I'm dissapointed for sure. Our season just got blown out of the water.

As for Ricky being Ricky? I have no problem with the fact that he quit. I have major issues with how he did it. He completely hosed his teammates and the coaching staff. There is no excuse for it.

He should have made this decision before the draft. Miami could then have been a player for Corey Dillion or drafted Stephen Jackson or Kevin Jones at #20. Once you make a commitment to do something you follow through on it.

Commitment is a funny word in football. None of the contracts are garanteed. So a team can cut you say... a week before training camp starts. So I don't blame ricky for screwing his team just like I don't blame Barry Sanders and Rob Smith. People quit jobs all the time. Even high paying ones.

I understand your argument but the "it's OK cause they could have done it to him" argument isn't a good fit here.
1) It was Ricky that convinced Wanndtedt to trade for him after a chance meeting in an airport.

2) Miami restructured much of the original and horrible contract Ricky signed when he entered the league by making some bonuses easier to reach and guaranteeing others.

3) Sanders had 10years of losing football undewr his belt. He was tired of it. It's completely understandable. If after 10 years the Lions had no inckling that Barry might retire at any time then they weren't paying attention.

4) Smith played out his contract and retired becasue he wanted to be a doctor. The vikings always knew this was a possibility but still, because there was a possibility he could go elsewhere as a FA the Vikings had every opportunity prepare for the worst.

5) Nonetheless, I wasn't referring to his committment to the Dolphins or its fans. Those are meaningless. He made a commitment to the guys that lined up with him everyday. He was a leader on this team. He stood up infront of then 4 weeks ago and takled about everyone digging a little deeper and comming together to win a Super Bowl. Then he bailed on them without so much as an "I'm sorry..."
That is beyond weak. It's shameful.

As an official Jets fan and Dolphins hater, I'm thrilled. If we could just get Tom Brady to suddenly retire too, I'd like the Jets' chances in the AFC East.

As for the retirement itself... I'd agree that the WAY he did it was particularly uncool... but I do understand. The way the Dolphins worked the guy, he stood a very good chance of becoming the next Earl Campbell -- 48 years old, walking with a cane, looking like he's 60.

I have no problem with a guy retiring young because he doesn't want to do lasting damage to himself. But Williams didn't take the honorable way out here. I can only guess that there's more to this than what we've heard so far, because from where I'm sitting, it sure looks like he waited until his announcement would screw the Dolphins the most. It can't be a coincidence that this happened days after the last of the free agent backs signed.

Wouldn't it have made a tad bit more sense though for him to go to Management first and tell them he was worried about being overworked?

Besides, this "overworked" concept is BS. He never complained one peep when he went for 1850+ yrds in 2002. Granted there weren't a lot of holes there last season but they reworked the 4/5's of the o-line this year. So what was he looking at, maybe one more year of tough sledding? The guy just NEVER wanted to be a pro football star. Hard to be a RB in the NFL if you don't like what you do...

Not that it matters much to the fans on this board but remember when Ricky was quoted on Sunday as saying that his failing a drug test last year had little or no impact on his decision to retire?? That since it was only his second offense and he was just facing a fine it really didn't matter?

Guess who was notified by the league, the day before he called Dave Wannstedt, that he'd failed a 3rd test and was facing a 4 game suspension?

So much for the openness and honesty parts of his journey of self discovery...

Oh thats such BS...If you want to change your career after 5 years are you a quitter? Barry Sanders is a quitter too right? I am not a fan of the Phins nor a AFC east fan so I could careless but it is very unfair that he is a quitter just because he was a football player.

That is because he had the urge that he did not want to play anymore. XXtra Clean (thats the name of the drink ESPN quoted it wrong) really works on your regular drug test that your job may send you out on so if it worked for him once then he knows it works but at the rate they were drug testing him he could still pass because you only need to take the drink a hour before the test but what was interesting to me was that this $35 drink ($50 in some places and I bet it going to get a bigger boost now)
can pass the NFL drug test. For a league that issued a fine over a half million dollars (Only for weed thats unfair) you would think they can the test in the machines that work like a centifuge and separates all particles from your urine.

SJUFAN2,

I am in south Florida since Friday and I can tell you, this is still a huge story a week after it became public. The Miami Herald's columnist Pope wrote an intersting article in yesterday's paper calling Ricky a quitter -- and I agree with him. As you know, I am a Jets fan but I am also a NFL fan and hate to see a talent like Williams wasted on drugs! It seems as if his lack of desire for football concided with him failing his drug test. Because of this incident, do you think the league will revise its drug policy especially if other prominent stars like Ricky call it quits?

In the meantime, south Florida is accepting the fact that the Dolphins will finish last this season in the AFC East. The local news is predicting that the offensive strategy will be to air the ball out and that Chambers will have a breakout season. I don't understand that as they don't even know who their quaterback will be? Feeley or Fielder? And with no running threat, there will be so much pressure on your quarterback. As you know, you have to be able to run the ball in the NFL to be successful. Also, your stud DL is still not sign and that is another problem for the organization. your fins got issues! Go Jets. :D

Looooie,

I agree with you 100%. As a diehard Jets fan, let me add two other games against the Dolphins that pain me today. In 1986, we were 10-1 and heading into Miami for a Monday night showdown and got blown out. That began a losing streak of the next 5 games and a wildcard berth. Also, the '85 season and the game in Miami where we lost a last minute shootout 20-17. Great game. And finally, in 1994, and the famous kneel-down/spike. Enough said. Maybe this season we can extract some revenge. Go Jets!

WS,

I agree that Ricky failed the drug test because he already decided to quit. But he didn't take the test two weeks ago. He took it months ago. If he knew he had taken a test that he was going to fail then he new he was going to quit. If that's the case then he owed it to his teammates to give them as much time as possible to deal with the consequences of his retirement.
I don't fault him for wanting a different life but I do hold him responsible for his actions. He hosed the Dolphins and didn't do it for very noble purposes.

USC,

1) I don't consider him a quitter in the sense that most fans do. He had his right to leave whenever he wanted but in very Ricky like fashion he used poor judgement on how to go about handling this whole thing.

2) We won't air it out. Wannstedt has already said as much. He's an awful coach.

3) Feeley will start. Fiedler is a known quantity. Feeley is the guy with upside. Once they are on equal footing from a knowledge standpoint, Feeley will win the job.

4) Our "running threat" will depend entirely on the play of our offensive line. If you have a good O-line then just about any back in the NFL can averag 4 yards a carry. Minor is no super star but he's an above average NFL back and if our O-line is decent he can do a very credible job. He'll never go for 1800 yrds like Ricky but if he can post 900+ then our running game will be credible.

5) Jason Taylor is our stud DL. Ogunleye is a very good player but much of his success is do to the fact that he line's up 1 on 1 with a RT every play and that JT is on the other side drawing double & triple teams.
Remeber Trace Armstrong? He had 1 double digit sack season in Chicago but once he came to Miami and lined up opposite JT he had two seasons like Oguleye. Then he signed a big deal with Oakland and was done.
Ogunleye will be signed or traded, but I don't expect him to be signed before 9/1.

I don't know if you heard but the Dolphins flagship radio station 560 WQAM (all sports radio) is bumping their morning format for Howard Stern. That means ex NY Jets play by play and now Dolphins radio broadcaster Howard David is out of his radio gig in the morning weekedays down here in south Florida. Personally, I don't like the move as I enjoy listening to those Fins fans crying on Monday morning. Unlike NY, these guys talk Fins footballs all day long during the season and alot during the offseason. And Miami is a major market. Go Jets!

Its too bad that he retired, yes he did it at a poor time, but he could have been reversed and he could have been let go (aka Eddie George) right before training camp. SJU FAN2, we have something in common. Although you are a Fins fan and I am a Patriots fan, we both hate the Jets. In fact, 2 years ago (that would be the season my team did NOT win the SuperBowl), I was actually rooting for Miami to beat the Pats in the last game of the season because that would have made the Jets wild-card chances slimmer.

Unfortunately your defense collapsed, but the Jets didn't make the playoffs anyway, so all's well that ends well ...

SJUFAN2 and Lawmanfan,

Both of you must be on the kool aid. Gang Green 10-6 and playoff bound.

Lawmanfan,

We did make the playoffs two years ago and lost to the Raiders in the divisional playoffs. Our last regular season win (where we trounced the Packers) clinch the division for us and sent the Pats and Fins home. Get your facts srtaight.

Predicted AFC standings:

Patriots 11-5
Jets 9-7 (no playoffs)
Bills 7-9
Dolphins 6-10 (Wannstedt fired)

I'd sign for that right now, Especially if the rumors that Nick Saban would get the job are true :!: :D

I think the Pats will go 12-4, Bills 9-7, Jets 8-8, Dolphins 5-11.

Bills will be last team into playoffs or the last team out in the AFC.

Final game of the season I think and was driving fron long-island with a friend and got stuck in major traffic going through the city. We are stuck before the tunnel cursing because it looked like the jets would be playing for nothing that day. THEN THE COMEBACK !!! We end up sitting in the parking lot with 1/2 the jet fans as the game starts. Then the crowd goes wild and the parking lot erupts and their was litterally a mad dash to get into the stadium and watch the jets dominate. We had 3rd row endzone and every score practically was in our endzone. It was great.

You just can't make this stuff up...

Ricky said in an interview yesterday that he'd come out of retirement to play for the Raiders. That the people in his native Cali would understand him better...blah blah blah.

In a side note, I'd like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Ricky on completing his voyage of personal discovery so swiflty. Guys like Ernest Hemmingway spent a lifetime searching for what Ricky apparently found in two weeks of marathon bong hits with Lenny Kravitz. Way to go Ricky!! We are proud of you...you da man

PS Ricky also said he was told the Raiders would give up a #1 for his rights...
