Actually when you read the account, the headline is a bit of sensationalism.

While there was a stabbing as a result of a scuffle, the terms gutted and disemboweled call to mind horrific acts of a Dahmer. Many years ago a 13 year old girl was murdered in valley stream and was mutilated with a hunting knife. I deliberately omit her name.

In the accounts published, it appears the accused was losing in a scuffle and being held down before plunging a knife deeply into the abdomen of the victim, performing his intestine.

While the kid is a captain, also appears that he wasn't a key player, although that hardly matters.

One athlete, one former athlete, except by association doesn't have anything to do with lacrosse. At 1230 a.m., makes you wonder if alcohol or other substances played a role.

Calls to mind Jay Wright's admonition to players and all students at orientation that from that point forward everything they do or say reflects on the university.

No way to spin the crime that is alleged to have occurred.

If facts exist that Defendant Stockfeder had prior behavior issues then the buck stops with St. John’s men’s head lacrosse coach Jason Miller who recruited the Defendant and allowed him to stay on the roster.

St. John’s Head Coach Mr. Miller has built an undistinguished record of 16 wins and 54 losses over the past 5 seasons.

The criminal charges against Defendant Stockfede will cause Mike Cragg to have sit down meeting with Mr. Miller to discuss the direction of the men’s lacrosse program.

Disemboweled? Gutted? What does that infer? The gutting of cattle or deer? By the account, the kid, perhaps in a rage fueled by alcohol or the behavior of his adversary stabbed him a single time. He apparently didn't draw the knife upwards or downwards to butcher or gut him. Perhaps he was being forced to submit to something that was a crime in itself. But by the account published in multiple sources it appeared to be a single deep puncture wound, perhaps by a very sharp knife that ended the physical altercation.

"Defendant" Stockfede was either be appointed by coaches or teammates as a captain, which means he was widely respected by the team.

There is the concept of lacrosse "bros" whereby lacrosse players look at themselves as renegades, throwback tough guys, etc. That notion probably had no bearing here.

Apparently these guys were friendly enough to have elected to live together off campus, so on that alone appears to be a regrettable confrontation. If their altercation is symptomatic of anything going on inside of the program, then confident Mike Cragg will address it.

Beast maybe if you were the one rushed to the hospital with as the victim stated your guts spilling out of your stomach you wouldn't spend so much time debating whether or not you were just stabbed, or gutted, or disemboweled.

I'm not saying this kid isn't completely culpable; he is, 100%. But as my mother used to say, "What did you do to make that happen?" If the victim wanted a quiet place, sharing an apartment with undergrads usually isn't it. My kids all had their share of good and bad roommates while in school, and some kids just don't show a lot of respect when it comes to making noise at certain times of the day, etc. Most kids study in the library and not in the dorms or apartments, which are often raucous at all hours of the day.

Don't forget, after an afternoon of insulting each other in text messages, the older kid, the victim, went to the frathouse with an idea to kick the perpetrators ass. There's no justification there, but had he stayed home and cooled off and they both let it go, nothing would have happened.

Of course, using a knife is just freaking insane. Neither kid look like beasts, so it not like the perpetrator was outweighed by 50 lbs.

Bowel injuries can result in some very long term problems. Short term, sepsis and infection is a real possibility. The kid may need a reversible colostomy, since solid wastes can infect the wound.

I was in a frat, and I don't even remember a serious fight, even against a rival fraternity. Frats always got a bad rap and St John'. They clamped down on us when there was an ROTC "frat" murder, but let ROTC (and all the government money) stay on campus.

All in all sad chapter. The perpetrator will likely get off somewhat easy, and the victim may have some extremely long effects of the stabbing.

“His small intensities were sticking out at the time of the incident, and one section of the small intestine was pierced through.” - Victims dad.
