I loved once upon a time in hollywood though. The last 20 minutes or so starting at the point where DiCaprio goes outside and starts yelling at the kinds to the point he was next door telling the guy at the gate what happened was one of my favorite funniest 20 minutes of movies. I couldn't stop cracking up especially during the break in and then Leo describing to the guy at the gate what happened. Omg I was dying

I had the same experience with it but I always love a QT film. I had the Ford v Ferrari screener sitting in my house Thanksgiving to New Years and never once thought of putting it in to watch but I did really enjoy Jojo Rabbit. Joker was very well made and more interesting than I thought it would be. Still want to see Parasite. Also liked Pain and Glory. Far from Almodovar's best work but still quite a good film and Banderas was excellent..

I've seen all the nominees since I get screeners and free admission to movies this time of year. Maybe we'll hear from mjmaherjr as well.
Here goes.
BEST PICTURE: The Joker on so many levels. Ford versus Ferrari is up there...highly entertaining. The Irishman loses out because people expected Goodfellas and this isn't on that level. It's up there as well. You can see me in a couple of scenes with Pacino and Romano if you don't blink. Worst choice is Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The studio spent a fortune promoting this piece of doo doo (which is how it's done. Any poster here could have written it... Lucky Bombshell wasn't on the list. It totally pales in comparison to The Loudest Voice. As an aside, Russell Crowe totally nailed Roger Ailes...but no award for him.
BEST ACTOR: Joaquin Phoenix takes this hands down...but who knows? Christian Bale whose Vice was totally on the money was totally screwed by the guy who lip synced Freddie Mercury. He could have been nominated for Ford vs Ferrari as a make good. Antonio Bandaras was a revelation in Pain and Glory. Leonardo DiCaprio was also excellent as were the others. Jamie Foxx should have had a nomination for Just Mercy but he got the shaft.
BEST ACTRESS: Rene Zellweger despite her suck on a lemon look nailed Judy and even did her own singing. I've heard complaints that JLo wasn't nominated for Hustlers...but JLo played JLo and turned a movie about prostitution into one of her mailed-in chick flicks.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Brad Pitt played Brad Pitt...so if you like Brad Pitt, you won't be sorry when he wins. No stretch here. Not deserving. Joe Pesci deserves it for the Irishman with Al Pacino close behind. My wife says Pacino mailed it in...but you don't need to go to acting school if you work with Pacino. He's an eye opener. The Oscar should go to Wesley Snipes for his role in Dolomite Is My Name. Not even a nomination? For you Eddie Murphy fans...he did a great job but I'm not upset he didn't get the recognition because he pretty much played all his characters.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: I love Laura Dern...but I wanted to strangle her in Marriage Story. She nailed it. Florence Pugh of Little Woman can act. I'd recommend you see her as a wrestler in Fighting With My Family if you get a chance. Kathy Bates was strong in Richard Jewell. You should see that movie. I used ESPN's 30 30 mini documentary on the Jewell case as part of my fake news segment when I was teaching at SUNY Rockland.
BEST FOREIGN MOVIE; Parasite should win. I thought it was a bit overrated. Maybe I'll watch it again. The Farewell with Queens own Akwafina was completely ignored. To me, it was worthy of an Oscar.

That's my two cents. Anyone?

I pretty much agree with all your winners I’d vote Pitt but if Pesci or Pacino won I’d wouldn’t have a problem I’d probably vote Pacino first. I wanna look at the documentaries. I really like watching docs

Newsman I’m surprised you went joker. I liked joker when I saw it but it was a little too derivative of Taxi Driver. My pick would be parasite I just thought the idea was so great and hilariously done, and then when the tone shifts it really knocked it out of the park.

1917 I enjoyed too, from what I’m hearing it sounds like 1917 winning is like a foregone conclusion.

I’d go 1) parasite 2) 1917 3) marriage story 4) Joker as my hierarchy. Didn’t see once upon a time in Hollywood. Big Tarantino fan so I have to watch eventually

I been reading here how good Parasite is so i go see it, my brother leave after 15min of it. I wanted to give it a chance, but after 50 minutes of it i go too.

Plus you gotta read the whole movie.

If it’s so much trouble for you to read subtitles during a foreign film then please stay home they aren’t for you

Great discussion/comments.
Loved the discussion about Toy Story vs. Frozen. Personally thought the animation (not the story) was best in Frozen.
Movies-I am between Once Upon A Time..In Hollywood, Joker and F vs F but leaning to Once upon a time. Thought 1917 was over hyped and thus disappointed. Glad to see a mention of JoJo Rabbit which while not a choice for best, is well worth the viewing, despite the quirky subject, is a funny/warm story with a child actor in his first movie who does a good job. Marriage Story, while by a fellow Brooklyn Guy, is solid but not in top tier. Parasite lost me with the excessive violence at the end. Little Women, which I looked forward to given its star Saoirse Ronan, lacked flow with its use of flashbacks. There were a number of good entertaining films this year which are not best but worth viewing such as The Irishman (thank God for Netflix as you can stop it as sitting for over 3 hours without a pit stop is a little much), Knives Out, Bombshell.

Actor/Actress--The 3 stars of The Irishman are wonderful actors but they were playing roles they have done before (loved the aging without make up but using technology). Toss up between Phoenix and Adam Driver and I'll go with Driver for taking a role outside of his usual Star Wars roles. His confrontational scene with Scarlett was powerful, reminded me of Burton/Taylor in Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf. Renee as Judy is clear fav but I liked Cynthia Erivo as Harriet. Brad Pitt was great in Once Upon A Time ..In Hollywood, loved how he fed his dog, and would love to hear his acceptance speech. Longshot would be Mr. Rogers (AKA Tom Hanks) where the movie was based upon a hard nosed reporters life change from interviewing Mr. Rogers for a 400 piece that became a 10,000 word article. Entertaining movie but have the Kleenex.

Get the pop corn popping and let the show go on.

Irishman, no surprises with these actors. Too long by 90 minutes.
1917. Great cinematography. Edge of my seat much of the movie.
