Very thoughtful editorial. There was absolutely no way to please everyone and I believe the University made the best possible decision. There are no guidelines for handling a situation like this.

Agree on all fronts. This is a great article, not only well written, but appears to be factually accurate, and her position well thought out.

I don't buy the complaints to not everyone having internet at home. I would imagine that just about everyone at all economic levels has a cell phone if they desire one, except for many elderly. I also am aware that some of my elderly relatives would go to the local library to use the internet for free, so while there may be some students without internet access from home, they could easily find places where internet access is free.

Let's face it - emptying out an entire school with several thousand kids in dorms (I think we have 3500 or so) is a massive job and a tremendous inconvenience to each student. I'm sure that to even work out a plan took an enormous amount of work, for St. John's and every other university. Hofstra allowed students to remain in dorms but yesterday gave all remaining students until Sunday to clear out.

The author was quick to rightfully go to the other extreme. Harvard has a $50 billion endowment, and could send each student home first class air without denting their endowment.

I am going to go out on a medium sized limb to say that this is the most talented, forward thinking administration that we've ever had. You can criticize Dr. Gempeshaw on several fronts, but tight fiscal controls allowed us to weather a significant financial crisis.

Most of us here are enthusiastic about the new leadership in the athletic department. There is some great new leadership across campus, and our outlook is strong.

Good article though. I believe under change by the minute circumstances, we are doing well.
