I remember the Manhattan coach being somewhat of a comedian.
Yeah, Brian Winters was the headliner. Was Kenny Smith referred to as 'Special K' back then, or was that another player?
My friend and I were in 6th grade and ended up on the same floor as the high school kids in the dorms, needless to say, we took a lot of abuse.
The stop Tom K would have be getting off at was Grand Ave, then crossing Queens Boulevard (maybe after getting a bite at 'McDowell's'.)

Kenny Smith nickname at the time was “The Jet”. He lived in LeFrak City at the time. Grand Avenue is correct. Tom K would scout games at Ascension, St Adalbert’s and St Mary Winfield all in close proximity amongst others. Hey but as we both know McDowell’s was a Wendy’s. :cheer: SJU hoops featured in Coming To America. I think I saw MJ Maher on the beer line in the Garden scene.

Also remember him being one of the main instructors at the Jack Curran basketball camp, circa 1982. Speaking of hall of famers, I would love to see the list of coaches that were at that camp, future legends. Coach K was there, I'm sure there were others, all trying to get their hands on the big names coming through Molloy.

I met Mr. Konchalski many years ago (1970’s) while playing in CYO in Queens. My Father would often give him a ride to the our next game or the subway. Don’t think he drove anywhere. Man must have scouted every gym in Queens and far beyond. Years later when I was working, I would see him on the Queens Boulevard line and he would say hello, somehow he remembered my name and would always ask about my parents.

Ken Shark, you have a good memory as he was an active Counselor at Curran’s Camp. He would run what was called “Stations” basketball drills before the morning games. No doubt “scouting” kids even at Camp. He would also occasionally attend our practices at Molloy.

He is a gentleman in every respect. Just some people you meet that leave an impression. Very dignified man.

Some of the coaches and others at Curran’s camp were Digger Phelps, Brian Winters (shooting clinic), Pete Carrill Sp?, Terry Holland, Whitey Rigsby. I also remember a defensive drill taught by the then Manhattan Jaspers Head Coach which was called ball, you, man! For the life of me I can’t remember his name but ball, you, man stuck. I still mutter it when watching SJU.

Was the Manhattan coach Jack Powers ??

Thanks Jersey Shore you made me think harder. It was Gordon Chiesa. I hope I spelled that correctly. He was very shall we say animated? Did a whole bit using Noczema (shaving cream) as “in your face” defense.

Also our own Al LoBalbo was ball you man bigtime

Yes he was.
