St. John’s assistant Van Macon has spearheaded the program’s local push on the recruiting scene and the staff’s key recruiter was back on the trail Saturday.

One of the city’s top showcases took place this weekend as Christ the King hosted its annual Apparel Challenge in Queens, a quadruple header highlighted by games featuring some of the top public and catholic programs in the city.

Behind Macon’s local connections, St. John’s has made a splash already, landing Julian Champagnie from Bishop Loughlin last spring then signing Our Savior Lutheran guards Posh Alexander and Dylan Wusu in November. St. John’s is still recruiting for the 2020 cycle and has been attacking the future classes as well.

On Saturday, Macon caught the second half of St. Ray’s vs. Chaminade, with St. Ray’s junior guard Malachi Smith among the standouts, before setting up shop to scout Brooklyn Collegiate vs. Cardinal Hayes and South Shore vs. Christ the King.

The Red Storm haven’t extended formal offers to any prospect at the event, but a pair of seniors have received interest in Cardinal Hayes forward Shemani Fuller and Christ the King sharpshooter Ryan Myers. Expect the Johnnies coaching staff to continue to evaluate the local leagues through postseason play, which starts later in February.

Good that we are still recruiting for 2020 and good that we are on local kids.

Love the fact that we have 4 recruiters on this staff who have strong ties to different areas such as JUCO, local HS kids and the southeast.
I expect incremental improvement next year as CMA fields a team with several of his recruits and a solid jump forward in our 2021-2022 team. I'll watch the rest of this year's games with low expectations but rooting like hell for our guys.
Would like to see Roberts get more minutes the rest of the year. I believe he is best suited to be a difference maker bringing energy off the bench next year if he can just add a little strength and get his free throw percentage above 50%.
