Wishing Damien a great senior season. He came to SJU and worked real hard, was a great teammate, an enthusiastic cheerleader and did not cause an iota of trouble. Was very glad to have him last season and I hope he has a monster year at Nichols State. Best of luck in all of his future endeavours and most importantly to graduating next spring.

Great post RMN, Damien gave us his best which is all anyone can ask for. Great kid and I hope he has a bangup last year at Nicholls State. That school has put a number of players in NFL I believe.

He had some big rebounds vs AZ, hit his FTs and played like he belonged there even outplaying way higher rated guys. I thought he was one of the keys to that game.

Wish him well. But the key for Coach Anderson and the progression of this program is to seriously upgrade the talent level so specifically come year 3 of this new staff SJU should be ready to compete at the top of the BE.

BTW-You can see it happening with UCONN. Bouknight is coming back. Next year is a year 3 under Hurley and year 1 in the BE. They are going to be good next year in the league. If we have a season.

When you are building a program, you wouldn't invest a four year scholarship in someone who might just impede roster improvement by year 3 or 4. It's what makes transfers and jucos important in the early going of constructing a high talent roster by year 3 or 4. If I had to guess Sears left with Anderson's blessing, and I agree with everything said about the kid. He was an important building block in the construction of a highly competitive program. You thank him and we move forward.

Roster construction in terms of sustainability of a top program is something all coaches at our level have to contend with. I remember how Isaiah Thomas cast caution into the wind and by the time he was fired the Knicks were saddled with huge contracts because Thomas only cared about the present in terms of winning. Donnie Walsh did a brilliant job of fixing that mess.

Norm Roberts left Lavin with an incredibly imbalanced roster which essentially had us starting over in year two of his regime. It paid dividends having a mature, experienced roster in year one, but to some real extent we never fully recovered from starting over in year two with all new rotation players. Of course, that cascaded to Mullin starting off with absolutely nothing, and when you look at the talent Matt (largely alone) brought in, we basically went from a losing mid major roster in year 1, to a team that should have secured bids in year 3 and four. In essence, by not moving swiftly to either nail Matt down to a guaranteed multi year (prob not happening after Slice), or having another top recruiting and one in the wings when Matt left, Mullin fired himself if Matt didn't do it for him.

Roster construction requires a long vision. I believe Anderson knows what he is doing here.

I agree Paul. I was at the game and remember being concerned when Sears entered the game and with the amount of time he was getting. However, in 17 minutes, he scored 4 points (2 of 2 from the line) and more importantly, had 6 rebounds against some big and talented AZ players.

The NNaji kid is a lot stronger than he looks and I remember him ripping the ball out of our players hands several times. Roberts and Earlington got in foul trouble. Sears came in and I thought game over because he had been playing sloppy. Instead he was the only player that held the ball and played with a lot of poise. Some depth we haven't had paid off.
